Cooling System Selection for Plastic Injection Machines

This project involved assessing, designing and implementing a cooling system for a production line equipped with plastic injection moulding machines. The aim was to identify the most technically suitable and economically efficient solution, choosing between a chiller system and a cooling tower while taking into account the initial investment costs as well as the long-term operating and maintenance costs.

A comparative analysis was carried out to select the technology, taking into account thermal performance, energy consumption, ease of maintenance, operational reliability, and the ability to ensure continuous plant operation. Based on thermal load calculations and operating conditions, it was determined that a cooling tower was the optimal solution as it would provide the required water temperature for the efficient operation of the injection moulding machines at a lower operating cost.

The system was designed to allow for expansion, enabling future machines to be incorporated without the need for significant modifications to the main infrastructure. Additionally, an overhead cooling water distribution network was designed to optimise space utilisation within the plant by keeping circulation areas clear for forklift trucks, staff, and production activities.

The hydraulic system design involved creating three independent cooling circuits, each dedicated to a different production line. This configuration provides greater operational flexibility and facilitates maintenance work, while improving process reliability by enabling each circuit to operate independently.

Consequently, the plant now has a scalable, energy-efficient cooling system that can be expanded as required, ensuring the stability of the injection moulding process and reducing operating costs.
