About Us
Umwelt-Optimierungsservice (Umweltos)
Our company's history dates back to 1993, in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. After a trip to Canada, where environmental management had more developed procedures compared to Mexico, a group of entrepreneurs identified an opportunity that at the time represented a disruptive innovation: offering professional environmental consulting and waste collection services in the city, a region where these concepts were just beginning to emerge.
At that time, the number of companies dedicated to waste management in Guadalajara was limited. On the other hand, most companies and industries did not even consider the possibility of paying for the disposal of their waste, as the public service absorbed a large part of that task. Despite this, with a Ford F-350 pickup truck, two 6-cubic-metre containers and a clear vision, we began operations focused on something bigger than simple collection: creating a change in behaviour and strengthening the culture of recycling, reuse and waste reduction.
The industrial market, known for its rigour, responded positively. Within a short period of time, leading companies in the sector, including leading food, glass and tool manufacturers, began implementing their pioneering programmes for the separation and recycling of cardboard, glass, plastic, wood and other materials in collaboration with us. What was initially perceived as a premature idea became a local movement that required learning, professionalisation and significant persuasion. It was imperative to educate the population on waste separation, demonstrate its value and facilitate its integration into an innovative circular economy process for the industry.
This commitment also led us to establish a presence in various communities. In order to promote better waste management practices, training campaigns were implemented in schools, universities, housing developments, and markets, mainly in the food and flower markets in Guadalajara. Participation grew significantly, leading us to make the strategic decision to build a semi-industrial plant in 2000, located in Zapopan, behind the Metropolitan Park. This plant was dedicated to the production of handmade glass bottles for tequila. This initiative met the needs of both the domestic market and the United States. However, due to high operating costs and technical vulnerabilities, the decision was made to close the project in 2006. Nevertheless, valuable lessons were learned.
Meanwhile, our good work in industrial waste collection and recovery was consolidated. Thanks to reliable processes and impeccable service, the company grew to become one of the three most important waste collection companies in Jalisco.
Between 2000 and 2002, a significant technical advance took place that represented a turning point in our field of activity. In collaboration with an engineer specialising in plastics, we developed stable procedures for the reuse of vitafilm, a waste product that posed a challenge for the industry due to the large volume generated and the lack of recycling options. The project was so successful that other companies replicated the model, giving rise to the regional concept of recovering this material and other waste with recycling potential.
This advance led to the accelerated adoption of industrial recycling and facilitated the implementation of formal integrated waste management systems by a greater number of companies. This also had an impact on the strengthening of the recycling market. Previously, waste collection was charged for; however, today, generators of recoverable materials are paid.
One of the company's success stories was the result of collaboration with Mexico's largest glass bottle manufacturer. Together, we created training and collection programmes in educational institutions and restaurants. In schools, we implemented a programme to exchange glass for school supplies, blackboards and sports equipment, while in bars, we established bottle destruction protocols to combat the market for adulterated beverages. This achieved a social impact and environmental control aligned with a common goal.
By 2004, our presence had not only strengthened but evolved. We expanded our services to include comprehensive waste management, including the collection of organic waste from markets for compost production, as well as certified fiscal destruction processes.
Between 2011 and 2013, we led the waste collectors section of the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce. From this position, measures were implemented to strengthen sectoral regulation and combat irregular practices by companies, which has contributed to raising the quality and formality of the industry in the region.
Over the years, we have carried out environmental projects in different parts of the country: the west (Jalisco, Colima), the north (Durango, Nuevo León) and the centre (Mexico City, Mexico State, Guanajuato and Querétaro). Each project refined our standards and consolidated our reputation as a benchmark for reliable, high-quality environmental solutions.
Finally, after three decades of hard work, learning and discipline, and after overcoming global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2023 the founding partners of these companies decided to close a cycle and devote themselves to their personal projects. Their legacy remains, as they built companies that helped transform environmental management in Jalisco and paved the way where no recycling industry existed before.
In 2025, a new chapter begins with UMWELTOS.
UMWELTOS is an acronym for the German term Umwelt-Optimierungsservice, which means Environmental Optimisation Services. The company was formally established in December 2025 in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico.
One of the main challenges facing both public and private institutions is the effective management of projects aimed at protecting the environment. There is no doubt that there are a large number of equipment and machinery manufacturers, as well as technical specialists, contractors. However, it should be noted that several shortcomings have been identified in the project integration process and in the collaboration between different areas of engineering.
We believe that by becoming Subject Matter Experts in Project Management and excelling in this field, we can boost sustainability in the places in which we operate. We are a Project Management Office that specialises in implementing projects for the water, waste and energy sectors.
